Sulfathiazole cream is a topical sulfonamide antibiotic used historically to treat superficial bacterial infections of the skin. It works by inhibiting the growth of susceptible bacteria, helping to reduce infection and inflammation in affected areas.

Product Description:

Sulfathiazole is a short-acting sulfonamide antibacterial, inhibiting bacterial folate synthesis by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid. Systemic sulfathiazole was abandoned decades ago because of crystalluria and hypersensitivity, and its remaining use is topical, at around 5% in creams and ointments for superficial skin infection, and in some markets as a vaginal preparation in combination with other sulfonamides.

Even topically, its position is weak. Sulfonamides are among the more common causes of allergic contact dermatitis, cross-reactivity with systemic sulfonamide allergy is a real consideration, and topical use may sensitise a patient who later requires a systemic sulfonamide. Most modern formularies prefer alternatives such as mupirocin or fusidic acid for superficial bacterial skin infection.

Sourcing notes. Registration status varies considerably and sulfathiazole has been withdrawn or restricted in a number of markets — confirm it is registrable in the destination market before any work begins, rather than assuming availability from the fact that it is manufactured somewhere. Where the requirement is topical antibacterial cover rather than sulfathiazole specifically, mupirocin and fusidic acid have far wider registration, better evidence and no sensitisation concern of this order.
