Oxomemazine is a first-generation antihistamine with sedative and anticholinergic properties. It is primarily used to treat dry or non-productive coughs, allergic conditions such as rhinitis or urticaria, and sometimes acts as a mild sedative.

Product Description:

Oxomemazine is a phenothiazine-derived first-generation antihistamine with pronounced sedative and anticholinergic properties, used principally as an antitussive for dry cough rather than as an allergy treatment. Its sedative effect is not incidental to that use — night-time cough suppression is a substantial part of its clinical role.

It is supplied predominantly as syrup, at around 0.33 mg per mL, and as tablets, frequently in fixed combination with guaifenesin or paracetamol in proprietary cough preparations.

Geographic footprint and regulatory caution. Oxomemazine is used mainly in France and francophone markets, in parts of the Middle East and North Africa, and in a few Asian markets. It has never been approved in the United States or the United Kingdom. Regulatory attitudes to sedating antihistamines in paediatric cough preparations have hardened considerably, and several authorities have restricted or withdrawn such products for young children on the grounds that risk outweighs demonstrated benefit. Any paediatric presentation must reflect the destination market's current age restrictions.
