Acrivastine is a second-generation antihistamine (H₁-receptor antagonist) used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions, such as hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis), perennial allergic rhinitis, and urticaria (hives). It works by blocking histamine H₁ receptors, preventing the action of histamine, which is responsible for allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching, runny nose, and watery eyes.

Acrivastine is a second-generation antihistamine derived from triprolidine, and it occupies an unusual position within its class. Most second-generation agents were developed for once-daily dosing; acrivastine has a short half-life of around two hours and is dosed three times daily. That is a commercial disadvantage against cetirizine or loratadine, but it gives a faster onset, which suits intermittent symptomatic use rather than continuous seasonal control.

It is supplied as 8 mg capsules, and in several markets in fixed combination with pseudoephedrine for concurrent congestion. Excretion is largely renal and unchanged, so dose adjustment is specified in renal impairment.

Sourcing notes. Acrivastine has a narrow geographic footprint compared with the major second-generation antihistamines, with its strongest presence in the United Kingdom and United States. That limits the number of manufacturers holding current dossiers and makes it slower to register in markets without precedent. Where the combination product with pseudoephedrine is the requirement, note that the pseudoephedrine component brings precursor-control obligations in most jurisdictions — import and export authorisations may be required for the finished product, not only for the raw material.
