Erdosteine is a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory conditions characterized by thickened mucus, such as chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by breaking down the disulfide bonds in mucus, making it less viscous and easier to expel. Erdosteine also exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the airways.

Product Description:

Erdosteine is a thiol-based mucolytic supplied as a prodrug: it is metabolised to an active metabolite carrying free sulfhydryl groups, which break the disulfide bonds cross-linking mucus glycoproteins and so reduce sputum viscosity. Beyond that mucolytic action it demonstrates antioxidant activity and has been shown to reduce exacerbation frequency in chronic bronchitis and COPD, which distinguishes it from mucolytics acting on viscosity alone.

The prodrug design is deliberate. Free thiols are gastric irritants, and delivering the molecule in a masked form improves tolerability relative to older thiol mucolytics. It is supplied as 300 mg capsules or tablets and as an oral suspension at 175 mg per 5 mL.

Sourcing notes. Erdosteine is a European product in origin and use, with its strongest presence in Italy, Spain, Turkey and parts of Asia, and it has never been approved in the United States. Registration precedent therefore governs which markets are realistic. Indian and Italian manufacturers hold both API and finished-dose capability. Where the requirement is mucolytic therapy generally rather than erdosteine specifically, N-acetylcysteine and ambroxol have far wider registration coverage and more supply options — though neither carries the same exacerbation-reduction evidence.
