This tablet combines bromhexine hydrochloride 8 mg, a mucolytic derived from the plant alkaloid vasicine, with phenylephrine hydrochloride 5 mg, an alpha-1 adrenergic decongestant. Bromhexine increases the output of thinner, watery mucus and breaks up mucopolysaccharide fibres in sputum; its main active metabolite is ambroxol. Phenylephrine constricts swollen vessels in the nasal lining. The pairing targets a chesty cough with a blocked nose. The phenylephrine dose is lower than the 10 mg used in many single-ingredient decongestant tablets.

It is used for short-term relief of productive cough with thick mucus and nasal congestion in colds, bronchitis and sinusitis. Tablets are usually taken three times daily. Bromhexine can upset the stomach and, rarely, cause serious allergic and skin reactions; a European safety review added warnings, so treatment stops at the first sign of rash.
