Product Description:
Methacholine chloride is a diagnostic agent primarily used to assess bronchial hyperreactivity, a defining feature of asthma and a condition that may also be present in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Its main clinical application is in the methacholine challenge test, a controlled pulmonary function test designed to evaluate airway responsiveness. During this procedure, the patient inhales increasing concentrations of aerosolized methacholine, which induces temporary bronchoconstriction in susceptible individuals. The degree of airway narrowing is then measured to help confirm or rule out asthma.
Methacholine acts as a direct cholinergic agonist, stimulating muscarinic receptors in the airways and causing smooth muscle contraction. Due to this mechanism, its use is strictly limited to diagnostic settings and is performed under close medical supervision with appropriate resuscitation measures readily available.
Therapeutic use of methacholine is minimal and uncommon because of its potential systemic effects. As a cholinomimetic agent, it can produce adverse cardiovascular reactions such as bradycardia and hypotension, particularly if absorbed systemically. For this reason, methacholine chloride is reserved exclusively for diagnostic purposes in specialized respiratory laboratories and hospitals, where it serves as a reliable and well-established tool for evaluating airway hyperresponsiveness and supporting accurate respiratory diagnosis.
