Naphazoline is a topical nasal and ocular decongestant belonging to the imidazoline class. It acts as an α-adrenergic agonist, causing vasoconstriction of mucosal blood vessels and providing rapid relief from nasal congestion and eye redness associated with allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, sinusitis, and common cold.
Product Description:
Naphazoline is an imidazoline-derived sympathomimetic acting as an alpha-adrenergic agonist. Applied topically to nasal or conjunctival mucosa it produces vasoconstriction, relieving congestion and redness within minutes. Onset is rapid and the effect is unambiguous, which accounts for its enduring consumer popularity.
The constraint that defines this product. Sustained topical use produces rebound congestion — rhinitis medicamentosa — in which withdrawal provokes congestion worse than the original symptom, driving a cycle of continued use. Labelling in most markets therefore limits use to three consecutive days, and patient non-compliance with that limit is the principal safety issue associated with the class. Ophthalmic naphazoline carries a parallel caution regarding rebound hyperaemia, and is contraindicated in narrow-angle glaucoma.
Paediatric exposure warrants particular care: accidental ingestion by young children can produce marked central nervous system depression, and several regulators have acted on packaging and concentration for this reason.
Sourcing notes. Naphazoline is inexpensive and widely available, so the commercial questions are presentation and regulatory classification rather than supply. Nasal drops, metered nasal spray and ophthalmic drops are distinct manufacturing propositions with different plant approvals — ophthalmic in particular requires sterile eye-preparation scope. Over-the-counter status, permitted concentration and pack size all vary by market and should be confirmed against the destination regulator before artwork is finalised.
