Product Description:

Monosulfiram, chemically tetraethylthiuram monosulphide, is a scabicide and a close chemical relative of disulfiram. It is toxic to Sarcoptes scabiei, the mite that causes scabies. This page lists a 5% medicated soap, a bar for washing rather than a leave-on lotion. The soap is meant for regular bathing during and after scabies treatment, fitting into daily hygiene for the whole household. It differs from the concentrated monosulfiram solution, which is diluted, applied to the body and left on.

The soap supports a leave-on scabicide such as permethrin cream rather than replacing it, because a rinse-off product has only brief skin contact. It is used in place of ordinary soap, following the label directions. Close contacts are treated at the same time, and clothing and bedding are washed hot. Lather is kept out of the eyes and off broken skin. Monosulfiram can be absorbed through the skin and, like disulfiram, may cause flushing, nausea and palpitations with alcohol, so users avoid drinking. Irritation means stopping use.
