Tretinoin belongs to a group of medicines called retinoids, which are similar to vitamin A. also used to treat acne, that occur as pimples on the skin.

Product Description:

Tretinoin is all-trans retinoic acid, the active form of vitamin A, and it is a prescription medicine rather than a cosmetic ingredient. It binds nuclear retinoic acid receptors and changes gene transcription in keratinocytes: it normalises the abnormal keratinisation that blocks follicles and forms comedones, speeds epidermal cell turnover, and over months increases collagen production in the dermis.

It is used for acne vulgaris and, at cosmetic-adjacent doses, for photoageing — fine wrinkling, roughness and mottled pigmentation — where it is the only topical with substantial trial evidence for structural change in the skin. Treatment provokes an expected retinoid reaction in the first weeks: dryness, redness, peeling and stinging, often with an initial worsening of acne, which is why patients need to be told what to expect or they stop. It causes photosensitivity, so sun protection is part of treatment. It is contraindicated in pregnancy.
