Lebrikizumab-lbkz is used for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and adolescents who are not adequately controlled with topical treatments. It works by inhibiting interleukin-13 (IL-13), a key cytokine involved in skin inflammation.

Product Description:

Lebrikizumab is a monoclonal antibody that binds interleukin-13 with high affinity and, distinctively, blocks the formation of the IL-13 receptor complex while leaving the natural clearance of IL-13 intact. Interleukin-13 is the central cytokine in atopic dermatitis: it drives the type 2 inflammation, disrupts the skin barrier, promotes itch and increases susceptibility to skin infection.

It is used for moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in adults and adolescents aged twelve and over who are candidates for systemic therapy, given by subcutaneous injection every two weeks initially and then monthly for maintenance in responders — a lower injection burden than some alternatives. In trials around half of patients reached clear or almost clear skin with substantial itch reduction. Conjunctivitis is the characteristic class adverse effect, occurring in a minority and usually mild; injection site reactions and herpes infections are also reported. It does not carry the boxed warnings of oral JAK inhibitors.

Sourcing notes. Originator biologic, on patent, no biosimilar. Cold chain at 2 to 8°C throughout, with a defined period permitted at room temperature before use. Prefilled pen and syringe are separate presentations. Supply is through authorised distribution, and reimbursement decides volume.
