Product Description:

Methohexital is an ultra-short-acting barbiturate. Like thiopental it potentiates GABA-A receptor activity and depresses the reticular activating system, producing unconsciousness within one arm-brain circulation time. It is about three times more potent than thiopental, and recovery is faster because it is redistributed and metabolised more quickly.

It is used for induction of anaesthesia and for short procedures, and it has one distinctive niche: electroconvulsive therapy. Most anaesthetics raise the seizure threshold, which works against the treatment; methohexital interferes least with seizure duration and quality, so it remains a preferred induction agent for ECT despite propofol having replaced it almost everywhere else. It is also used for paediatric sedation rectally in some settings. Pain on injection, involuntary muscle movements and hiccups are common. Unlike thiopental it can provoke seizures in patients with epilepsy, and it is contraindicated in porphyria.

Sourcing notes. Supply is narrow and it has been subject to shortage. Demand is small but concentrated and hard to substitute, coming from psychiatric units running ECT programmes.
