Product Description:
Desflurane is a halogenated ether inhalational anaesthetic. Its very low blood-gas solubility means it equilibrates between lungs, blood and brain faster than any other volatile agent, so anaesthesia deepens and lifts quickly and recovery is rapid and predictable — a real advantage in long operations, in obese patients and in day surgery. Its low boiling point means it requires a heated, pressurised vaporiser rather than a standard one.
It is used for induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia in adults, and maintenance in children. It is pungent and irritant to the airway, so it is not used for gas induction. Its clinical profile is now secondary to its environmental one: desflurane is an extremely potent greenhouse gas, with a global warming potential around two and a half thousand times that of carbon dioxide and an atmospheric lifetime of a decade. Sevoflurane, total intravenous anaesthesia and regional techniques provide the same clinical result with a fraction of the impact.
Sourcing notes. The European Union has banned desflurane from 2026 except where no other anaesthetic is medically suitable, and the UK health service phased it out earlier. Demand now sits in markets without such restrictions and is declining. It also requires a dedicated vaporiser, which limits switching.
