Maraviroc is an antiretroviral medication used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It works by blocking the CCR5 co-receptor on human cells, preventing the virus from entering and infecting immune cells. Maraviroc is used in combination with other antiretroviral agents for effective HIV management.

Product Description:

Maraviroc is the only antiretroviral that acts on a human protein rather than a viral one. It binds the CCR5 chemokine receptor on the surface of CD4 cells, changing its shape so that HIV-1 gp120 cannot attach — the virus is blocked from entering. People who naturally lack functional CCR5 are largely resistant to HIV infection, which is the observation the drug was built on.

It is used with other antiretrovirals for HIV-1 infection, but only for virus that uses CCR5 to enter cells. Some HIV strains use the CXCR4 receptor instead, and maraviroc has no activity against them, so a tropism assay is required before prescribing and is repeated if treatment fails. Hepatotoxicity carries a boxed warning, sometimes preceded by a systemic allergic reaction. Postural hypotension occurs, and the dose must be adjusted substantially for interacting drugs, since it is a CYP3A4 substrate — a common source of dosing error.

Sourcing notes. The tropism assay is a genuine barrier: a market without access to it cannot use the product. Tablets and oral solution are separate presentations and the strength field should distinguish them. Generic versions exist in some markets.
