Product Description:
Penciclovir is a guanosine nucleoside analogue antiviral agent used for the topical treatment of herpesvirus infections, including herpes labialis (cold sores) on the lips and face. It selectively inhibits viral DNA polymerase, preventing viral replication, and exhibits low toxicity with good antiviral specificity.
When applied as a 1% topical cream, penciclovir reduces the duration of healing, alleviates pain, and shortens the period of detectable viral activity in herpes labialis. Clinical use has demonstrated that penciclovir can reduce symptom duration by approximately one day compared to the natural course of infection, which typically lasts 2–3 weeks.
Penciclovir is most effective when applied at the earliest signs of an outbreak, such as tingling, redness, or itching, allowing targeted antiviral action directly at the site of viral activity. Its favorable safety profile and localized application make it a widely used option for managing recurrent herpes simplex virus infections.
