Fluticasone furoate is an intranasal corticosteroid distinguished by very low systemic bioavailability — below one percent after intranasal administration — which underpins its safety profile in long-term use, including in paediatric patients where growth suppression is the concern that governs prescribing. It is a different ester from fluticasone propionate, with greater glucocorticoid receptor affinity and a longer tissue residence time, supporting once-daily dosing at 27.5 mcg per spray.

Intranasal corticosteroids are the most effective single class for moderate to severe allergic rhinitis, exceeding oral antihistamines for nasal congestion in particular. Onset is gradual, with full benefit at several days of continuous use, and patient non-adherence stemming from that delay is the usual reason for reported treatment failure.
