Flupentixol is antipsychotic, and melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant. It has antidepressant and antianxiety effects, while melitracen has antidepressant effect. The mixture of the two components is used to treat mild to moderate mental disorders.

Product Description:

This tablet combines two drugs at low doses: flupentixol, a thioxanthene antipsychotic which at very low doses has activating and anxiolytic effects rather than antipsychotic ones, and melitracen, a tricyclic antidepressant. The rationale is that the combination lifts mood and reduces anxiety faster than an antidepressant alone, and the low doses are intended to avoid the adverse effects each drug causes at therapeutic strength.

It has been used widely across Asia and parts of Europe for anxiety with depression, and for somatic and functional complaints. It is not approved in the United States or the United Kingdom, and its rationality has been questioned: combining a fixed low-dose antipsychotic with a fixed low-dose tricyclic prevents either component from being titrated, and long-term flupentixol exposure carries a risk of extrapyramidal symptoms and tardive dyskinesia even at low doses. Melitracen brings tricyclic effects — dry mouth, drowsiness, cardiac conduction changes and danger in overdose.
