Product Description:

Dequalinium chloride is a quaternary ammonium antiseptic with broad activity against bacteria, including the anaerobes that characterise bacterial vaginosis, and against Candida and trichomonads. As a cationic surfactant it disrupts microbial cell membranes and enzyme systems — a physical mechanism to which resistance does not readily develop, which is its main advantage over antibiotics in a condition that recurs frequently.

It is used as a vaginal tablet for bacterial vaginosis, inserted once daily for six days. Trials have found it comparable to intravaginal clindamycin, with the advantage that it does not suppress lactobacilli the way antibiotics do, so the protective vaginal flora recovers faster. It acts locally with negligible systemic absorption, which is why it is usable in pregnancy in many markets where systemic antibiotics would be avoided. Local irritation, itching and discharge are the common complaints. The tablet needs moisture to disperse, and women with a very dry vagina are advised to moisten it before insertion.
