Cholic acid, also known chemically as 3α,7α,12α-trihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid, is a primary bile acid naturally synthesized in the liver from cholesterol. It is a white crystalline substance that is insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol and acetic acid. Salts of cholic acid are called cholates. Along with chenodeoxycholic acid, cholic acid is one of the two major bile acids in humans, existing in roughly equal concentrations. Cholic acid derivatives are formed from cholyl-CoA, which conjugates with glycine or taurine to produce glycocholic and taurocholic acids, respectively.
