Product Description:
Trientine tetrahydrochloride is a chelating agent used in the management of Wilson’s disease, a rare genetic disorder characterized by excessive accumulation of copper in the body. Trientine is the hydrochloride salt of triethylenetetramine (TETA), an organic polyamine compound that binds copper ions and facilitates their elimination through urinary excretion. By reducing free copper levels, trientine helps prevent progressive damage to the liver, brain, and other organs associated with copper toxicity.
Trientine tetrahydrochloride is primarily indicated for patients who are intolerant to D-penicillamine therapy and may also be used as an alternative first-line treatment in certain cases. It does not contain sulfur and is generally associated with a more favorable tolerability profile compared to penicillamine.
The medication is approved for use in adults, adolescents, and pediatric patients aged five years and older. In the European Union and the United Kingdom, trientine tetrahydrochloride is marketed under the brand name Cuprior, while trientine hydrochloride is marketed in the United States under the brand name Syprine. Trientine plays a critical role in long-term copper control and disease stabilization in patients with Wilson’s disease when used under appropriate medical supervision.
