Product Description:

Teduglutide is a recombinant analogue of glucagon-like peptide-2, a hormone released by the distal gut after meals. One amino acid substitution makes it resistant to breakdown by dipeptidyl peptidase-4, extending its action to allow once-daily injection. GLP-2 is intestinotrophic: it increases villus height and crypt depth, improves blood flow and slows gastric emptying, so the remaining bowel absorbs more fluid and nutrients.

It is used in adults and children with short bowel syndrome who depend on parenteral nutrition or intravenous fluids. In trials, many patients reduced parenteral support volume, and some came off it altogether, which changes quality of life substantially. Because it stimulates gut growth, it could accelerate existing polyps or cancers: colonoscopy is performed before starting and periodically after. Intestinal obstruction, gallbladder and pancreatic disease and fluid overload are also recognised.
