Product Description:
Amikacin sulfate is a broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from kanamycin, known for its potent antimicrobial activity against a wide range of Gram-negative bacteria. It exerts its bactericidal effect by irreversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacterial cells, specifically interacting with the 16S rRNA and S12 protein. This action disrupts the formation of the translational initiation complex and causes misreading of mRNA, ultimately inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death.
Due to its strong efficacy, amikacin is primarily used in the short-term treatment of serious and hospital-acquired infections caused by susceptible organisms. These include respiratory tract infections, septicemia, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, and infections of the skin, bones, and joints. It is often reserved for cases where other antibiotics may be ineffective or resistance is suspected.
Amikacin sulfate is typically administered via intravenous or intramuscular routes under strict medical supervision. Its targeted mechanism, combined with its effectiveness against resistant bacterial strains, makes it an important option in critical care and severe infection management.
