Combination medicine that is used to treat heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, or upset stomach. Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium trisilicate is also used to provide temporary relief from heartburn and acid indigestion caused by acid reflux.

Product Description:

This suspension combines aluminium hydroxide and magnesium trisilicate as antacids with kaolin, a purified hydrated aluminium silicate clay. The antacids neutralise gastric acid; magnesium trisilicate reacts slowly and forms a gelatinous silica layer that may give some mucosal protection. Kaolin is an adsorbent, traditionally included to bind irritants and add bulk, with a mild constipating effect that counters the magnesium component.

It is used for heartburn, acid indigestion and upset stomach. Evidence that kaolin adds meaningful benefit is weak, and adsorbent clays have largely disappeared from antacid and antidiarrhoeal formulations in regulated markets. Kaolin also adsorbs other drugs, reducing their absorption, and together with the antacid components this makes interactions broader than with a plain antacid: other medicines should be taken well apart. Long-term magnesium trisilicate use has been linked to silica kidney stones.

Sourcing notes. Registered mainly in South Asian and some African markets. Regulated markets have largely withdrawn kaolin combinations, and several regulators have reviewed fixed-dose antacid combinations for rationality, so confirm acceptability in the destination market first. Kaolin is a mined material, so heavy-metal and microbial limits in the clay are critical quality specifications.
