This suspension combines two antacids with an antifoaming agent. Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide neutralise gastric acid, and pairing them is deliberate: aluminium salts tend to constipate and magnesium salts tend to loosen the stool, so the combination largely cancels out each ingredient's effect on the bowel. Dimethicone lowers the surface tension of gas bubbles so they coalesce and pass more easily, which addresses the bloating and fullness that often accompany dyspepsia.

It is used for short-term relief of heartburn, acid indigestion and flatulence. Taken after meals and at bedtime, when acid output is highest, it gives rapid but short-lived relief. Antacids bind or alter the absorption of many drugs — tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron, levothyroxine, bisphosphonates and some antiretrovirals — so other medicines are separated by two to four hours. In significant renal impairment both aluminium and magnesium can accumulate.
