They combine with stomach acid and neutralize it.

Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide Suspension is an oral antacid formulation used to provide fast and effective relief from symptoms caused by excess stomach acid. It works by neutralizing gastric acid in the stomach, thereby reducing irritation and discomfort associated with conditions such as heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, and dyspepsia. Aluminium hydroxide acts slowly to neutralize acid and helps protect the stomach lining, but it may cause constipation. Magnesium hydroxide, on the other hand, acts more rapidly and has a mild laxative effect. When used together, these two agents balance each other’s gastrointestinal side effects while providing sustained acid-neutralizing action.

The suspension form ensures quicker onset of action compared to solid dosage forms and is easy to administer, especially for patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
