Product Description:

Somatostatin is the natural fourteen-amino-acid hormone, given as a continuous intravenous infusion. It inhibits the release of growth hormone, insulin, glucagon, gastrin and several other hormones, reduces splanchnic blood flow and lowers portal pressure, and reduces gastric acid and pancreatic exocrine secretion.

Its main use is acute variceal bleeding in portal hypertension, where reducing portal pressure helps control haemorrhage while endoscopy is arranged, given alongside antibiotics and endoscopic treatment. It is also used for pancreatic and intestinal fistulas and, in some markets, after pancreatic surgery. Its half-life is only a few minutes, so it must be given as a continuous infusion and stops working almost immediately when the infusion is interrupted — a practical drawback compared with octreotide, its long-acting analogue, which can be given by injection and is preferred in many guidelines. Transient hyperglycaemia or hypoglycaemia occurs because it suppresses both insulin and glucagon.

Sourcing notes. Registered in Europe, Asia and Latin America, but not in the US, where octreotide is used instead. Supplied as lyophilised powder for reconstitution, with a short in-use stability window. Demand is hospital-based and concentrated in hepatology and gastroenterology units.
