Sodium Chloride Injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution of sodium chloride in water for injection, used for restoring fluid balance, correcting electrolyte disturbances, and serving as a vehicle for the administration of compatible drugs. It is widely known as Normal Saline (0.9%), representing an isotonic solution with body fluids.

Sodium chloride 0.9% is the most widely used intravenous fluid in the world, supplying sodium and chloride in water at a concentration close to that of plasma sodium. It is used for fluid resuscitation, to correct dehydration and sodium depletion, as a vehicle for diluting drugs, and for flushing lines and catheters.

It is often called normal saline, which is misleading. Its chloride concentration is about 154 mmol per litre, roughly half again the chloride in plasma, and large volumes cause hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis. Chloride loading also constricts the afferent renal arteriole and reduces renal blood flow, and large trials comparing saline with balanced crystalloids have shown small but consistent differences in kidney outcomes favouring balanced solutions in critically ill patients. It remains the fluid of choice in specific situations — hypochloraemic alkalosis from vomiting, hyponatraemia correction protocols, and as a diluent where compatibility requires it. In kidney disease and heart failure, sodium load matters and volumes are chosen accordingly.

Sourcing notes. A high-volume, low-margin commodity where freight, container format and sterility assurance decide the deal. Glass, PVC and non-PVC bags differ in cost, weight and regulatory acceptability, and several markets now require non-PVC. Bag sizes and port configurations should be specified.
