Product Description:

Simethicone suspension at 40 mg/mL is an anti-foaming medicine for excess gas in the gut. Simethicone, spelt simeticone in Europe, is a mixture of dimethicone (a silicone oil) and silicon dioxide. It lowers the surface tension of small gas bubbles so they merge into larger ones that are passed more easily by belching or flatus. It is not absorbed into the body. The concentrated liquid suits infants and young children, because a full dose fits in a dropper or a fraction of a millilitre.

It is used for the relief of wind, bloating and abdominal discomfort from trapped gas, and for gassy discomfort in babies. Infant drops are usually given with feeds. Hospitals also use simethicone before endoscopy and some imaging, where gas bubbles can hide the view. Side effects are rare. Pharmacists will advise shaking well before each dose and seeking review if symptoms persist. Simethicone is an OTC medicine in many markets, though the rules for infant products can be stricter.

Sourcing notes. Ask for the dossier in CTD or ACTD format, as your regulator requires for OTC products. The simethicone should meet the Ph. Eur. or USP monograph, including the defoaming activity test. Suspensions need data on resuspension, viscosity, preservative efficacy and microbial limits, and Zone IVb stability for hot markets.
