Product Description:

Pantoprazole injection is a vial of freeze-dried pantoprazole sodium, equivalent to 40 mg pantoprazole, made up just before use. Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor: it binds irreversibly to the H+/K+-ATPase in parietal cells and shuts down the final step of acid secretion. The intravenous form is for hospital patients who cannot take tablets, such as those who are nil by mouth, ventilated or vomiting. It keeps acid suppression going until oral therapy is possible.

Intravenous pantoprazole is approved for reflux oesophagitis, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease with a history of erosive oesophagitis, gastric and duodenal ulcer when oral therapy is not appropriate, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which needs higher doses. Each vial is reconstituted with sodium chloride 0.9%, then given as a slow injection or diluted for a short infusion. Patients switch to oral therapy as soon as they can. Longer acid suppression is linked to low magnesium and Clostridioides difficile infection, and reduced acidity lowers atazanavir absorption.
