Product Description:

Prasterone is synthetic dehydroepiandrosterone, an inactive precursor steroid. Inserted vaginally, it is taken up by the cells of the vaginal wall, which contain the enzymes to convert it locally into oestrogens and androgens. The conversion happens inside those cells, so the hormones act where they are made and are largely inactivated before reaching the circulation — the basis of its claim to treat local symptoms without meaningful systemic hormone exposure.

It is used for moderate to severe dyspareunia — painful intercourse — due to menopausal vulvovaginal atrophy, given as a daily insert at bedtime. In trials it improved vaginal cell maturation, reduced pH, and relieved pain during intercourse. The local androgen component is proposed to help with tissue structure in a way oestrogen alone does not, though comparative evidence is limited. Vaginal discharge, because the insert is in a solid fat base that melts, and abnormal Pap smear findings are the reported adverse effects. It is contraindicated in undiagnosed genital bleeding.
