Product Description:
Pindolol, sold under the brand name Visken, is a non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker primarily used in the management of hypertension. It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors, leading to a reduction in heart rate and blood pressure. Pindolol is approved for the treatment of hypertension in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and is also used for angina pectoris in several regions outside the United States.
In addition to its cardiovascular effects, pindolol exhibits antagonist activity at serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, preferentially blocking inhibitory autoreceptors. Due to this mechanism, it has been studied as an adjunct therapy in combination with antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and clomipramine, for conditions such as depression and obsessive–compulsive disorder.
While pindolol can effectively lower blood pressure and heart rate when used alone, the overall clinical evidence base is limited due to relatively small study populations. In some countries, pindolol is also used for the management of arrhythmias, prophylaxis of acute stress reactions, and anxiety-related conditions. Its combined cardiovascular and neuropharmacological properties make it a unique therapeutic option in select patient populations.
