Product Description:
Phenytoin is an antiepileptic medication widely used for the prevention and management of tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures and focal seizures. It is not effective in the treatment of absence seizures. Marketed under the brand name Dilantin, phenytoin is available for oral and intravenous administration, allowing flexibility in both long-term therapy and acute seizure management.
Phenytoin acts by stabilizing neuronal membranes and reducing excessive electrical activity in the brain through modulation of voltage-gated sodium channels. This mechanism helps prevent the spread of seizure activity within the central nervous system. The intravenous prodrug fosphenytoin is commonly used in cases of status epilepticus when seizures do not respond adequately to benzodiazepines. Following intravenous administration, therapeutic effects typically begin within 30 minutes and may last up to 24 hours.
Phenytoin may also be used in the management of certain cardiac arrhythmias and neuropathic pain. Due to its narrow therapeutic index, blood concentration monitoring is often required to ensure optimal dosing and minimize adverse effects. Phenytoin therapy is initiated and maintained under careful medical supervision to ensure safety and effectiveness.
