Product Description:
Tolcapone is a prescription medicine used in the management of Parkinson’s disease and is commonly marketed under the brand name Tasmar. It belongs to a class of drugs known as catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitors. Tolcapone works by blocking the COMT enzyme, which is responsible for breaking down levodopa in the body. By inhibiting this enzyme, tolcapone increases and prolongs the effect of levodopa, helping to improve motor symptoms such as stiffness, tremor, and slowness of movement in patients receiving levodopa/carbidopa therapy. It is considered a selective, potent, and reversible nitrocatechol-type COMT inhibitor.
Due to its mechanism and strong effect, tolcapone is typically used as an add-on treatment when standard Parkinson’s therapy does not provide sufficient symptom control. However, its clinical use is limited because it has been associated with serious liver toxicity. For this reason, strict liver function monitoring is required during treatment, and marketing authorization has been suspended or restricted in several countries. As a result, tolcapone is generally reserved for carefully selected patients under close medical supervision.
