Meperidine is a synthetic opioid used to relieve moderate-to-severe pain by acting on opioid receptors in the central nervous system. It can be administered orally (tablet or syrup) or by injection (intramuscular, intravenous, or subcutaneous), with effects starting within minutes and lasting a few hours.

Product Description:

Meperidine, known internationally as pethidine, is a synthetic opioid agonist at the mu receptor. It was the first fully synthetic opioid and was once used widely, but its position has narrowed sharply for a specific pharmacological reason: it is metabolised to normeperidine, a metabolite with no analgesic effect and a long half-life that accumulates with repeated dosing and causes tremor, twitching, agitation and seizures. Accumulation is worse in renal impairment and in older patients, and naloxone does not reverse it.

It is used for moderate to severe acute pain, and it retains a niche in treating post-anaesthetic shivering and rigors, where low doses work through kappa and alpha-2 mechanisms. Most guidelines now advise against it for routine or repeated pain control, preferring morphine or fentanyl. It must not be combined with MAO inhibitors, which can cause a severe serotonergic reaction, and caution applies with SSRIs.

Sourcing notes. Meperidine and pethidine are two names for the same molecule, so buyers searching either name should be directed to the same supply discussion. It is a Schedule I narcotic under the 1961 UN Single Convention, requiring import and export authorisations, national quota and secure custody.
