Product Description:

Melphalan is a nitrogen mustard attached to the amino acid phenylalanine, a design that lets it enter cells through amino acid transport systems. Once inside it cross-links DNA and kills dividing cells. Plasma cells are unusually sensitive to it, which made melphalan the foundation of myeloma treatment for decades and still keeps it central to transplant conditioning today.

The oral tablets are used for multiple myeloma in patients not proceeding to transplant, often with prednisolone or a newer agent, for advanced ovarian adenocarcinoma, and for AL amyloidosis. Absorption from the gut is incomplete and variable between patients, so blood counts rather than the dose on the prescription guide treatment. Myelosuppression is cumulative and recovery slow. Secondary myelodysplasia and acute leukaemia are recognised after prolonged exposure, and the drug causes infertility.
