Product Description:

Procarbazine is an unusual alkylating agent that requires metabolic activation and then methylates DNA, and it has a second life as a weak monoamine oxidase inhibitor — which is why it carries dietary and drug interaction warnings that no other cytotoxic does. It crosses the blood-brain barrier freely, a property few alkylators share and the reason it persists in brain tumour protocols long after similar drugs were retired.

It is used in Hodgkin lymphoma, historically as the P in the MOPP regimen, and in the PCV combination for anaplastic oligodendroglioma and other gliomas, taken orally over several days of each cycle. Alcohol produces a disulfiram-like reaction, and tyramine-rich foods and sympathomimetic or serotonergic drugs risk hypertensive crisis or serotonin syndrome — these restrictions must be explained before treatment. Myelosuppression, nausea, and a substantial risk of infertility and of secondary leukaemia follow prolonged use.
