Magnesium trisilicate mixture contains three active ingredients, magnesium trisilicate, magnesium carbonate and sodium hydrogen carbonate (also called sodium bicarbonate). These are called antacids and are commonly used in a variety of indigestion remedies.

Product Description:

This is a traditional liquid antacid, closely related to the pharmacopoeial magnesium trisilicate mixture. Sodium bicarbonate acts almost immediately but briefly. Magnesium carbonate acts quickly and more durably. Magnesium trisilicate reacts slowly and forms a gelatinous silica layer that may coat the mucosa. The combination gives fast relief that lasts longer than any one component alone.

It is used for heartburn, acid indigestion and dyspepsia, taken after meals and at bedtime. The carbonate and bicarbonate release carbon dioxide on contact with acid, so belching and bloating are common. Magnesium salts tend to loosen stool. The sodium content matters in heart failure, hypertension, renal disease and pregnancy, and sodium bicarbonate can cause metabolic alkalosis if used heavily. Magnesium accumulates in renal impairment, and prolonged magnesium trisilicate use has been linked to silica kidney stones. As with all antacids, other drugs are taken separately.

Sourcing notes. An old, inexpensive formula with many manufacturers, sold mostly in South Asia, Africa and the Commonwealth. The mixture must be shaken to redistribute the insoluble components, so suspension stability and ease of redispersal are the quality points to agree, alongside sodium content per dose for labelling.
