Magnesium trisilicate is an inorganic compound that is used as a food additive. The additive is frequently used by fast food chains to absorb fatty acids and extract impurities formed while frying edible oils. It has good acid neutralizing properties, but the reaction appears too slow to serve as an effective non-prescription antacid.

Product Description:

Magnesium trisilicate is a slow-acting antacid. In the stomach it reacts with hydrochloric acid to form magnesium chloride and hydrated silicon dioxide. The neutralisation is gradual rather than immediate, and the gelatinous silica produced may coat the gastric mucosa, giving a degree of physical protection. Because the reaction is slow, it is often combined with faster-acting antacids such as sodium bicarbonate or magnesium carbonate.

It is used for heartburn, acid indigestion and dyspepsia, taken after meals and at bedtime. Magnesium tends to loosen stool, and diarrhoea is the usual adverse effect at higher doses. Magnesium can accumulate in renal impairment. Long-term use has been linked to silica kidney stones, so it is suited to short-term symptom relief rather than continuous use. As with all antacids, it reduces absorption of tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron and levothyroxine, so doses are separated.

Sourcing notes. Magnesium trisilicate is produced in food and pharmaceutical grades; only pharmacopoeial pharmaceutical grade is appropriate for a medicine, and the monograph should be named in the quotation. For a liquid, suspension stability, redispersal on shaking and microbial preservation are the quality points to agree. A low-cost product with many manufacturers.
