This tablet combines lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and astaxanthin with copper, iodine and selenium, and is marketed for eye health. Lutein and zeaxanthin concentrate in the macula, where they filter blue light and neutralise free radicals. Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid from microalgae with strong antioxidant activity. Beta-carotene is a source of vitamin A. Copper, iodine and selenium are trace elements.

The evidence base is the Age-Related Eye Disease Studies, which showed that a specific high-dose formula slowed progression of intermediate age-related macular degeneration to its advanced form. That benefit applies to people who already have intermediate AMD, not to general eye health. The second study replaced beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin because high-dose beta-carotene increases lung cancer risk in smokers and former smokers. A formula containing beta-carotene is therefore not appropriate for people who smoke or have recently stopped.

Sourcing notes. Buyers should specify the dose of each component, including whether the formula is intended to match the AREDS2 amounts. Astaxanthin has a maximum daily intake set in the EU. Carotenoids oxidise easily and need protected formulation and packaging, and the source of each — marigold, algae or synthetic — should be declared.
