This capsule combines beta-carotene with lutein, supplied as a 6% extract. Beta-carotene is a provitamin A carotenoid: the body converts it to vitamin A as needed, so it is a safer source of vitamin A than preformed retinol in cases of deficiency. Lutein is a non-provitamin carotenoid that concentrates in the macula of the eye, where it filters blue light and acts as an antioxidant. The combination is marketed for eye health.

An important caution applies. In large trials, high-dose beta-carotene supplements increased lung cancer incidence in smokers and in people exposed to asbestos. That finding is why beta-carotene was removed from the formulation used in the second Age-Related Eye Disease Study, which replaced it with lutein and zeaxanthin. Current and recent smokers should avoid beta-carotene supplements. High intake causes harmless yellowing of the skin.

Sourcing notes. Buyers should specify the dose of each component when enquiring. Lutein is usually extracted from marigold flowers, and the extract percentage refers to lutein content; the specification should state lutein and zeaxanthin content separately. Beta-carotene may be synthetic or natural. Both carotenoids oxidise, so the formulation and packaging need antioxidant and light protection.
