Product Description:

This tablet combines four micronutrients: ferrous ascorbate 100 mg, folic acid 0.5 mg, zinc sulphate 20 mg and vitamin B12 50 micrograms. Ferrous ascorbate is an iron(II) salt of ascorbic acid, chosen because the ascorbate keeps iron in the ferrous state the gut takes up most readily. Folic acid and vitamin B12 are both needed for red blood cell formation, and zinc is an essential trace element.

In many markets iron and folic acid combinations are registered medicines, dispensed for deficiency states and often in pregnancy under medical advice; elsewhere the same formula is a food supplement, and then no disease claims may be made. Pharmacists expect a label warning to keep iron products away from children, because accidental iron overdose is dangerous in the young. Tablets are usually taken once daily after food. Tea, milk and antacids interfere with iron uptake, and iron binds tetracyclines, quinolones and levothyroxine, so doses are spaced apart.
