L-Ornithine L-Aspartate is a medicine used in the treatment of liver disease. It protects the liver from harmful chemical substances and prevent the liver from getting damaged.

Product Description:

L-ornithine L-aspartate (LOLA) is a stable salt of two amino acids that the liver and muscle use to remove ammonia. Ornithine is a substrate of the urea cycle in liver cells. Aspartate and ornithine are both converted to glutamate, which muscle and brain use to combine ammonia into glutamine. Together they lower blood ammonia, which accumulates in liver failure and contributes to hepatic encephalopathy.

The injection is used in hepatic encephalopathy, usually alongside lactulose and rifaximin, and is diluted and given by slow intravenous infusion. Meta-analyses suggest it improves encephalopathy grade and lowers ammonia, though the quality of evidence is moderate and guidelines differ in how strongly they recommend it. Nausea and vomiting can occur, especially with fast infusion. It is contraindicated in severe renal impairment because it adds a nitrogen load that failing kidneys cannot clear.

Sourcing notes. Registered as a medicine in Europe, Asia and Latin America, but not in the US. The concentrate must be diluted before infusion, and compatibility with infusion fluids and maximum infusion rate belong in the product documentation. The oral granules are a separate registration.
