Powder contains lactitol monohydrate. It is used in the treatment of chronic constipation, especially in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Constipation is a condition in which you have bowel movements less than three times per week. Do not take this medicine if you have galactosaemia (a genetic disorder in which you cannot digest galactose), unexplained abdominal pain or bleeding, or blockage in your bowel (not caused by constipation).

Product Description:

Lactitol is a sugar alcohol made from lactose. It is not absorbed or broken down in the small intestine, so it reaches the colon intact, where bacteria ferment it into short-chain fatty acids. These acidify the colon and draw water into the bowel by osmosis, softening stool and increasing its volume. It works in a similar way to lactulose but is supplied as a powder, which some patients find easier to take than lactulose syrup.

It is used for chronic constipation in adults, with an effect usually seen within a day or two, and it was approved in the US in 2020 for chronic idiopathic constipation. Acidification of the colon also reduces ammonia absorption, so higher doses are used in hepatic encephalopathy in some countries. Bloating, flatulence and abdominal discomfort are common at first. It is not suitable for people with galactosaemia or intestinal obstruction, and electrolytes should be monitored in older or frail patients on long-term treatment.

Sourcing notes. Lactitol is registered as a medicine for constipation in Europe and the US, and it is also a food ingredient, so the grade and intended use must be clear. Pharmaceutical grade should meet the pharmacopoeial monograph. The powder is hygroscopic and must be protected from moisture.
