Product Description:
Halcinonide is a high-potency topical corticosteroid, placed in US class 2 and European class III to IV. It is a fluorinated steroid with an acetonide group, a structure that increases receptor affinity and resistance to metabolism in the skin, giving strong suppression of inflammation in resistant dermatoses.
It is used for psoriasis, severe eczema, lichen planus and other inflammatory skin conditions that have not responded to weaker preparations, applied thinly to affected areas two or three times daily for a limited course. It is intended for trunk, limbs and thick-skinned sites rather than the face, eyelids, flexures or genital skin, where high-potency steroids cause atrophy within weeks. The risks scale with potency, surface area and occlusion: skin thinning, striae, telangiectasia, bruising, steroid acne and, with extensive use, suppression of the adrenal axis. Rebound flare on abrupt withdrawal is common after prolonged use, so treatment is tapered to a weaker steroid.
Sourcing notes. Cream, ointment and solution presentations are separate registrations, the solution being intended for the scalp. Registration is limited, mainly to the US and parts of Europe. Because potency classifications differ between US and European systems, any quotation should name the classification being used.
