Product Description:

Ethamsylate, also spelt etamsylate, is a synthetic haemostatic agent. It is thought to act on the capillary wall and on platelets, improving platelet adhesion and capillary resistance, rather than by changing clotting factors or blocking fibrinolysis. This page covers the solution for injection at 250 mg/mL, the same concentration as a 500 mg/2 mL ampoule. The injection serves patients who cannot take tablets or need a quicker onset, as in theatre, and is given by slow intravenous or intramuscular injection.

It is used for capillary bleeding during and after surgery, including gynaecological, ENT and dental procedures, and in some markets for heavy menstrual bleeding. It is an adjunct, never a substitute for surgical control of bleeding or for blood products, and for postpartum haemorrhage WHO guidance favours tranexamic acid.
