Product Description:

Efinaconazole is a triazole antifungal developed specifically for the nail. The difficulty with onychomycosis is not killing the fungus but reaching it: the nail plate is dense keratin, and most topical antifungals bind to it rather than passing through. Efinaconazole has low keratin affinity and a low surface tension formulation, so it penetrates the nail plate and the space underneath rather than sitting on top.

It is used for onychomycosis of the toenails caused by dermatophytes, applied once daily for forty-eight weeks with an integrated brush applicator, including under the tip of the nail. Complete cure rates in trials were modest — under a fifth — but that compares against a condition where topical treatment previously achieved almost nothing, and it avoids the liver monitoring and drug interactions of oral terbinafine or itraconazole. Local application site reactions, ingrown toenail and dermatitis are the reported adverse effects. It is flammable.
