Product Description:

Cyproheptadine syrup gives the same first-generation antihistamine as the tablet in a liquid at 2 mg per 5 mL, the usual strength. Cyproheptadine blocks histamine H1 receptors and also serotonin (5-HT2) receptors, and it has anticholinergic and sedating effects. The liquid lets doctors dose children by body weight, and it suits adults who cannot swallow tablets.

Labelled uses are the same as for the tablet: allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, urticaria and itchy skin conditions. Drowsiness is common. Young children can react with excitement rather than sleepiness, and an overdose is dangerous in children, so an accurate measuring device and a child-resistant cap matter. It must not be given to newborns or premature infants, or together with MAO inhibitors. Pharmacists will check for angle-closure glaucoma, urinary retention, prostate enlargement and peptic ulcer with obstruction, and older adults are more sensitive to its side effects.

Sourcing notes. Cyproheptadine is prescription-only in many countries, though legal status varies. Formulations differ: some contain sugar or alcohol, so say whether you need a sugar-free or alcohol-free version. Request a CTD or ACTD dossier. Many regulators accept a biowaiver for an oral solution when its excipients match the reference product, but check the rule in your market. Ask for Zone IVb stability data, in-use stability after the bottle is opened and the preservative assay. Amber PET or glass bottles with a measuring cup or oral syringe are common; store below 30 °C.
