Product Description:

Dexchlorpheniramine is the active dextro-isomer of chlorphenamine, a first-generation H1 antihistamine of the alkylamine group, so it works at about half the dose of the racemic drug. It eases sneezing, runny nose, itching and hives, and has anticholinergic and sedative effects. The syrup serves children and adults who cannot swallow tablets, and lets the dose be measured in fine steps. This page lists 0.5 mg/5 mL; 2 mg/5 mL is the more widely registered syrup strength, so confirm the concentration you need.

It is used for allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, urticaria and itchy allergic skin conditions. Doses are repeated every four to six hours using the supplied measuring device. Drowsiness is common, so patients are warned about driving and alcohol. Anticholinergic effects call for caution in angle-closure glaucoma, urinary retention and prostatic enlargement. Many regulators restrict sedating antihistamines in young children, with the age limit set by the local label. It is not combined with MAO inhibitors.
