Product Description:

Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides built from glucose units linked in a ring — six in alpha, seven in beta, eight in gamma. The ring is a truncated cone with a hydrophilic exterior and a hydrophobic interior cavity, and that geometry is the whole point: a poorly soluble drug molecule sits inside the cavity as a non-covalent inclusion complex, and the complex dissolves where the free drug would not.

In formulation they are used to raise aqueous solubility and dissolution rate, to stabilise molecules against hydrolysis and oxidation, to mask taste and odour, and to convert liquids into handleable powders. Derivatised forms dominate parenteral use — hydroxypropyl-betadex and sulfobutylether-beta-cyclodextrin — because underivatised beta-cyclodextrin has limited water solubility and causes renal tubular injury when given intravenously.

Sourcing notes. Specify the grade before requesting a quotation, because "cyclodextrin" on its own does not identify a material. Alpha, beta and gamma cyclodextrin differ in cavity size and therefore in which molecules they will complex, and they differ sharply in water solubility. Derivatised grades — hydroxypropyl-betadex and sulfobutylether-beta-cyclodextrin — are the ones used parenterally, because underivatised beta-cyclodextrin causes renal tubular injury intravenously.
