Product Description:
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, commonly known as hypromellose (HPMC), is a semisynthetic, inert, and viscoelastic polymer widely used in the pharmaceutical, ophthalmic, and food industries. It is derived from cellulose and modified to improve its solubility, stability, and functional performance in various formulations. In pharmaceuticals, hypromellose serves primarily as an excipient and controlled-release agent in oral solid dosage forms such as tablets and capsules, helping regulate the release of active ingredients over time and improving product stability.
In ophthalmic preparations, hypromellose is frequently used in lubricating eye drops and artificial tears to relieve dryness and irritation by forming a protective film over the surface of the eye. Its excellent film-forming and thickening properties make it useful in improving the viscosity and retention time of eye care products. Additionally, hypromellose is widely utilized in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical coatings, including vegetarian capsule shells as an alternative to gelatin.
Beyond pharmaceuticals, hypromellose is also approved as a food additive (E464) where it functions as an emulsifier, stabilizer, thickening agent, and suspending agent. Due to its safety profile, compatibility with many ingredients, and versatile functionality, hypromellose remains an important multifunctional excipient used in a wide range of healthcare and industrial applications.
