Chloroprocaine is a local anesthetic of the ester type, commonly used for infiltration, peripheral nerve block, and epidural anesthesia. It has a short duration of action and a rapid onset, making it useful for short surgical procedures and obstetric anesthesia. Compared to other local anesthetics, it has lower systemic toxicity due to rapid metabolism by plasma cholinesterase.

Chloroprocaine is an ester-type local anaesthetic, and its defining property is how fast it disappears. Plasma cholinesterase hydrolyses it within seconds of entering the bloodstream, giving a plasma half-life measured in under a minute. That makes systemic toxicity very unlikely even at large doses, which is why it became the agent of choice for epidural anaesthesia in obstetrics, where drug crossing to the fetus matters.

It is used for infiltration, nerve block, epidural and caudal anaesthesia, and a preservative-free formulation is used for short spinal anaesthesia in day surgery, where its rapid offset allows discharge sooner than bupivacaine permits. Onset is fast and duration short, around thirty to sixty minutes. Historic problems with neurological injury were traced to the preservative sodium bisulfite in old formulations, not to the drug, and modern preservative-free presentations are used intrathecally. Methaemoglobinaemia is a rare ester-class effect.

Sourcing notes. Preservative-free and preserved presentations are entirely different products with different permitted routes — intrathecal use requires the preservative-free form, and confusing them has caused harm.
